Saving for a Bike

Fourteen-year-old Karim gets twenty dinars of pocket money every month. His parents give him the money on the first day of the month, and he has to pay for his bus tickets, his phone credit and his school extras with it.

Last year, Karim spent all his money in the first two weeks. He bought video games and comics, whereas his sister Nour, who is two years older, saved half of hers every month. In June, Nour bought herself a second-hand bike with her savings. Karim was jealous. “Why can’t I have a bike too?” he asked his father. “Because you spend your money as fast as you get it,” his father answered.

This year, Karim has decided to change. He writes down everything he buys in a small notebook, and he puts five dinars in a money box every month. “It is harder than I thought,” he admits, “but I feel more responsible.” His grandmother is so proud of him that she has promised to add ten dinars if he saves all year.

Karim is going to buy his bike next summer. He has already chosen it: a blue mountain bike, lighter and faster than Nour’s!

Writing: advice about pocket money

writing and self-assessment

Your cousin Sami always spends his pocket money too quickly, and then he borrows money from his friends.

Task: write him a short letter of 8 to 10 lines. Give him advice on how to manage his pocket money (what he should do, what he must not do) and explain why.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

A model text to compare with (after writing mine)

Dear Sami,

Aunt Mouna told me that you often borrow money from your friends. I want to help you, because I had the same problem last year. First, you should write down everything you buy, so you can see where your money goes. Then, you must decide how much you want to save before you spend anything. I put a quarter of my money in a box on the first day of the month. You mustn’t borrow money any more: it is more difficult to pay it back than to wait a few days. Finally, try to find cheaper ways to have fun, like playing football with friends instead of buying new games. Saving is not as hard as you think, and you will feel prouder and freer.

Love,
Malek
